Hunting Retriever training help?
I have 2 labs who i would like to train how to hunt. they are both about a year old and can still learn. My one yellow lab is obsessed with a tennis ball and will fetch it until he dies but he wont get a duck like he does a ball even though he loves to swim. Anyone have any tips to help replace them in his mind. My other lab is a good dog who stayed with us and loves to swim while we are placing the decoys. I got a goose the other week and she swam out to it but he didn’t bite it. instead she sniffed it as she was treading water and she put her head on top and pushed its head under water. Any tips to get her to bring it back?
just went hunting again and my yellow lab started retrieving the teal that i brought home. right as i brought it to my back yard he bit it. wierd. maybe cause its small idk

About the first lab you mentioned, a dog that young probably doesnt relize when he out to hunt or out to play fetch. My young lab did the same thing the first couple times out duck hunting. We shot a duck and he didnt retrieve it, so we showed it to him the put it into some tullies, i told him to fetch the bird and he did. Then on out he retireved ducks. So make sure the young lab knows hes out there to hunt (maybe he’s not a hunter?) about the second lab you mentioned, my same dog wouldnt retrieve pheasants(sort of the same size as a goose) and we though maybe because it was to big for him, then about a year later he started to retrieve them, i dont know why ha. Maybe get one of those training dummies thats pretty big and put some scent on it and throw it in the water and see if she retrieve it. Keep workin with them they are still very young and all they want to do is play. Keep training and they will catch on.

Can you teach a 3 year old Labrador to be a gun dog? if so how?
I am thinking about getting my dog involved into a “sport” that some people don’t approve of, But I know for a fact he will excel at it. I wanted to get my labrador Hunter trained to be a hunting dog, one that can retrieve game such as duck, geese and quail. I have never hunted feathered game but to be prepared I’d like my dog to be trained for it. I have introduced him to some gun sounds, only on the computer. He had a wonderful response, Absolutely no movement, The speaker was right next to him and he just looked at me like “that was it?!?!” I have no idea where I should take him to get him trained. I have looked pretty much everywhere I even contacted the trainer that helped John Grogan with his lab Gracie. She told me that I should contact a labrador club in my area, Lucky for me there is only one : They don’t even help you train the dogs. They give you tips. But that’s pretty much it.
Extra Information: Hunter is pretty much trained, He is very eager to follow my commands, he retrieves objects to me, His prey drive is strong. He also has a soft mouth he can hold very soft objects in his mouth without causing any harm. Hunter is trained to put objects in his mouth with the command “carry” and will not drop that item out of his mouth unless he was instructed to.
I would really like some help with training him to be a hunting dog, If anybody knows of any trainers in Arizona I can contact or if you can help me it will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
-Ashley

Yes you can teach a 3 year old Lab to be a gun dog – PROVIDED he has the temperment to be around loud guns and retrieve.
A simple google search for gun dog clubs or hunting dog clubs in AZ will yield some gun dog clubs in Az. Remember – you don’t need to go to a breed specific club – you can put your lab in training with other breeds.

Good luck! Another sport that my lab and I enjoy is Dockdogs – so if you cannot find the Gun Dog club or your dog isn’t suited for it – Dockdogs are A LOT of fun.

I found an orphaned kitten, im not sure how old she is, made apt for vet, any tips?
While walking my puppy (9 month old pom) this morning (around 4 AM) when i got off of work I heard a high pitched whining, my pom and I investigated the noise and found a lone kitten between a shed and a building, the opening was only about a palm’s width thick and there were pipes laid in the opening, along with the kitten. I looked for the mother, the other kittens, or someone around the building until 8 this morning. I called the vet and made an appointment, first available is tomorrow.
I dont know how old she is, but i just read that you can tell by which teeth have grown in already, but im not going to wake her up to check, she finally calmed down and fell asleep. I have raised two puppies, but not from this young (I got both of them at 8 weeks). She still has blue eyes and she can walk, but it is still really low to the ground. She has some of her teeth, I could feel them when she tried to nurse from my finger. I have her sleeping on top of a towel and heat pad (set on low) and I am aware of how to stimulate to potty.
Is there anything else I need to know in the mean time?
How should i monitor my pups around her? They are very well behaved and socialized, I want to use this as another socialization tool for them, but not risk the stress or well being of the kitten. Other than my pom (who just wants to lick the kitten) I have a 5 month old 52 pound chesapeake bay retriever (who will be a duck hunting dog, so he is being trained to have a “soft mouth” and he is very delicate with my 5 pound pom).
The kitten had a couple fleas, ants, and a lot of dirt on her but her eyes and nose are clear of discharge and her poo was solid with no blood, mucus or worms. Should I attempt to bathe her or wait for the vet?
Thank you for the help, I am new to this section, I am a regular in the dog section.

any idea how old she might be? She is finally asleep with my fiance..

From the looks of it she’s inbetween 4 and 5 weeks old. You definitely seem to be doing everything right so far. Seeing as she is so young, I’d get some kitten milk replacer if you haven’t already as a 4/5 week old kitten is not going to be weaned from mom yet. Though, you probably can start introducing solids as well.
I’d definitely keep a close eye on her around your dogs, even if they dont intentionally try to hurt her, a clumsy 5 month old puppy that weighs 50 lbs can easily accidentally step on her.
Until the vet visit, just keep an eye on her, give her a nice meal and a nice warm place to sleep.

I have a period of 3-4 hours beewetn the time I leave for work and my husband comes home. Is that to long for a 8wk old puppy? Should I put the crate in a small hall? ,leave the crate door open and put newspaper next to the outside door in case the puppy has to go potty? Also wouldn’t 8 hours at night be too long to keep a 8 wk old puppy confined in a crate I am getting my puppy in only a couple more weeks she will be 8 wks old. If you can answer my questions I would really appreciate it.

ok, so lol i trained my cuhiuahha to use the litter box, and this is how, instead of taking him outside after accidents we used a pee pad, basically instead of taking the dog outside put the puppy on a pee pad, it takes awhile butting finally my dog knows to go on the pee pad and we put that pee bad inside of a dog litter pan that you can get from petsmart, its so much cheaper then dog litter which can run $25 for 5 pounds. thats at high. Now even though she goes out now, we leave her litter box there just in case we dont make it in time tto let her out, and when i got to my parents we lay down a pee pad and if we cant watch her closely she bee lines to that [pee pad, great thing i ever did. though she perfers grass walmart also sells pee pad olders that have astroturf on top to give that real feal which can also be used as littert pan.
Super Nova i think is just inandivg your desk , and not really respecting you
Walk your dog! A has an amazing tgleilinence and need to exercise which is being frustrated by you. It’s like keeping a teenager in a crib and diapers! You live in an apartment? Walk your dog. You are a shut-in? Hire a dog walker. Let me guess the is “temperamental” and barks and snaps at people and other dogs. Jeez. Walk your dog or give it away so it can have a better life.References :

Great write-up, I am nmaorl visitor of one’s blog, maintain up the excellent operate, and It is going to be a regular visitor for a lengthy time.
This is how I potty trained my dog and he got it in one day! As soon as he peed on the crpaet I got a paper towel and soaked it up then I put the soaked paper towel where I wanted him to pee. When my dog went over to sniff it where I wanted him to pee (on a doggy potty pad), I praised him and told him good boy. Also when he sniffed the soaked paper towel, I lifted his leg like the motion he does when he pees. He connected the two together and the next time, he went pee on his potty pad. As soon as he went pee where I wanted him to, I gave him lots of praise and a treat. Don’t punish him for not doing what you want. He’s gonna get confused and sad. Just keep repeating the steps and hopefully you get a potty trained dog!
